§1When to buy it
Drums, pails and other round containers; chemicals; any load whose footprint is closer to square than rectangular.
Ask your customers before switching footprints. A square pallet changes trailer and rack loading patterns at both ends.
§2RFQ fields
| Footprint | 42 × 42 in, ±1/8 in |
|---|---|
| Style and entry | Stringer, notched for partial 4-way, or 4-way block: state which |
| Top deck | Coverage suited to drum chimes: state maximum gap so a drum rim can't drop between boards |
| Rated loads | Dynamic load for four full drums plus margin, in lb |
| Wood | New or recycled; species; moisture |
| Contamination | If reused, no chemical residue; state any segregation needs |
| Volume and cadence | Pallets per month, delivery ZIP |
§3Acceptance and reject criteria
| Accept a pallet when… | Reject a pallet when… |
|---|---|
| Square within tolerance (measure both diagonals). | Broken or missing boards, cracked stringers. |
| Top-board gaps no wider than the stated maximum. | Gaps wider than the stated maximum anywhere a drum rim sits. |
| Rated load documented for this design. | Chemical staining or odour on reused pallets. |
§4Inspecting deliveries
- Sample each delivery with an attribute sampling plan agreed in the contract (ANSI/ASQ Z1.4 general inspection level II is a common reference), and record the lot size, sample size and defects found.
- Count a pallet as defective on the first reject criterion it meets; don't add up minor faults into a reject unless the contract says so.
- Photograph every rejected pallet with the delivery's bill of lading number visible, and send the photos with the debit note within the contract's notice window.
§5What to watch in the contract
Fewer suppliers run square pallets on automated lines, so prices and lead times vary more than for 48×40. Ask two or three suppliers to quote.
Recycled 42×42 supply is thin in many markets; plan on new wood unless a supplier can show steady core volume.
Grade words vary by supplier and region; confirm every field with your receivers and your own engineering.
