§1When to buy it
Use it when your customers' receiving rules call for a 48×40 footprint and you want consistent, bright, unrepaired wood, for example on export lanes that don't need treatment, high-value consumer goods, or automated lines that jam on repaired boards.
If your loads go one way and the pallet never comes back, compare its delivered price with a recycled #1 pallet before you commit; the cost-per-trip calculator does this side by side.
§2RFQ fields
| Footprint | 48 in (stringer length) × 40 in (deck width), tolerance ±1/8 in on each dimension |
|---|---|
| Style | Stringer, three stringers, notched for partial 4-way entry |
| Wood | New lumber; species group and minimum grade stated by supplier (e.g. mixed hardwood, SYP) |
| Top deck | Board count, thickness and width stated by supplier; maximum gap between top boards in inches |
| Bottom deck | Board count and thickness stated; lead boards on both ends |
| Fasteners | Helically threaded or annularly threaded nails; length and count per joint stated |
| Rated loads | Dynamic (lift-truck) load and, if racked, racking load across the 40 in or 48 in span, in lb, with the method used to rate them |
| Moisture | State whether lumber is green or kiln dried; maximum moisture content if mould is a concern |
| Marking | Supplier mark or stencil if you need traceability by lot |
| Volume and cadence | Pallets per month, delivery frequency, delivery ZIP, dock hours |
§3Acceptance and reject criteria
| Accept a pallet when… | Reject a pallet when… |
|---|---|
| Overall dimensions within the stated tolerance on a tape check. | Any broken, split-through or missing deckboard or stringer. |
| All boards present, fully nailed, no nails protruding above the deck surface. | Protruding nails or nail heads, or exposed nail points on any face. |
| Notches clean enough for a fork to enter without splitting the stringer. | Bark, rot, visible mould or excessive wane that reduces the bearing surface. |
| Rated load documented by the supplier for this exact design, not for a family of designs. | Pallet that rocks on a flat floor beyond the agreed tolerance. |
§4Inspecting deliveries
- Sample each delivery with an attribute sampling plan agreed in the contract (ANSI/ASQ Z1.4 general inspection level II is a common reference), and record the lot size, sample size and defects found.
- Count a pallet as defective on the first reject criterion it meets; don't add up minor faults into a reject unless the contract says so.
- Photograph every rejected pallet with the delivery's bill of lading number visible, and send the photos with the debit note within the contract's notice window.
§5What to watch in the contract
New wood is priced off lumber. When the BLS lumber indexes jump, new-pallet quotes follow within weeks, so agree an index clause instead of re-quoting every quarter.
Ask whether the supplier will deliver recycled pallets as substitutes when new is short. If you don't accept substitutes, say so in the contract.
Receiver rules that name this kind of pallet: Walmart WFS pallet requirements for sellers, Kroger inbound pallet requirements (Corporate Brands).
