The name comes from the Grocery Manufacturers Association, and the 48 by 40 inch footprint is what grocery and retail receivers usually ask for: both retailer documents cited on this site do. In everyday use, "GMA pallet" means a 48×40 stringer pallet with partial 4-way entry, but the term says little about grade, wood or loads.
Retailer documents use the term too. Kroger's guidelines call for a "GMA Pallet (40x48)"; write the details out in your own spec.
